I took the song, “I Believe I Can Fly,” by R. Kelly, to one of my schools yesterday. I am so glad I did! On the dry erase board I wrote a short bio about R. Kelly and the song we were going to sing and study was written for Magic Johnson. That really got the students’ attention.
Many of the kids new the song upon playing it and started singing with the ipod. I did give them a copy of the lyrics. I connected it with the new year and new beginnings.
I also wrote a couple of questions on the board: 1) Last year I couldn’t…/This year I could… 2) This year I didn’t believe I could…/Next year I believe I will be able to…
The discussion was unbelievably wonderful! One young lady brought tears to my eyes. She told me that last year she was bullied by another student in her old school and was made to feel ugly and not worth anything. Her parents took her out and now she is in our wonderful school. This year she feels like she could do most anything. She also told me she has never rode a bike before. This year she wants to finally do that. She wants to fly. She came to me after class thanking me for letting her tell her story and I told her how beautiful she was. Another student told me how nervous he was last year and that he knows that he was disruptive and very disrespectful to me and his other teachers he feels due to another student who brought him down. This year he is trying to take control of his life, do well in school and be more respectful. There were other stories as well.
Music can really make us think about our lives; who we are, who we want to be, and help us soar.
Shana Tova M’tuka. Have a sweet, good, peaceful, and fulfilling year.
